In September 2005 the people of Birr, Co. Offaly the depot town of the
Regiment, welcomed the Association to discuss ways of commemorating the
strong linkage between the Town with the Leinster Regiment.
Representing Birr
were Mr. John Carroll, Chairman, Birr Town Council,
Mr. Derek Coulter, Chairman, Birr Military Historical Society,
Mr. Joe Breen, Secretary, Birr Military Historical Society,
Margaret Hogan, Birr Historical Society
and Mr. Pat
Milne the owner of land of the former Barracks.
Representing the Leinster Regiment Association were
Mr. Vincent McGough,
Chairman,
Major General The O'Morchoe,
President,
Mr. David Ball,
Secretary,
Mr. Séan Cooke of
Crinkill Co. Offaly, the Depot representative.
One
of the outcomes of that very successful meeting was decision to commemorate the
Regiment's Depot Barracks at Crinkill, just south-east of Birr. The barracks
were destroyed in the actions leading up to the independence of Ireland in 1922,
and all that has remained for some time is the perimeter wall. Subsequent to
that successful meetings have been held involving the Association's
representative, Mr Ian Lowe in relation to the design of a suitable memorial.
