Town of Messines (Mesen)

During the First World War Messines was completely destroyed. It took years to rebuild Messines as a typical Belgian community. Messines (locally called Mesen) was a City long before the French Revolution, but lost this title during the Dutch occupation.
In 1985, the town name was reinstated, making Messines the smallest City in Belgium.

The "Sights Page" provides information on all local WW1 memorials and museums

Heuvelland is the area that encompasses the area fought over in the Battle of Messines-Wijtschate, when the allies set out to recapture a ridge that Germany had occupied since the beginning of the conflict.

When you click the Heuvelland link wait for the complete new page to load then select the English language link.

On the Heuvelland website visit the Events and WW1 in Heuvelland pages for information.
